India witnessed an important moment in its judicial history as Justice Surya Kant was sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. 

President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union ministers, and top legal dignitaries in attendance. Justice Surya Kant now takes charge of the Supreme Court at a crucial time, bringing with him decades of experience, landmark judgments, and a reputation for fairness and clarity.

Who Is Justice Surya Kant?

Hailing from Petwar village in Haryana’s Hisar district, Justice Surya Kant’s rise to the country’s top judicial position is an inspiring story of determination and dedication. A brilliant student and a sharp legal mind, he earned his Master’s in Law from Kurukshetra University, securing first position in his batch.

Before stepping into the Supreme Court, he served as the Advocate General of Haryana, later became a judge of the Punjab & Haryana High Court, and eventually took charge as the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court. His elevation to the Supreme Court in 2019 marked the beginning of a series of influential contributions to Indian law.

Over the years, Justice Surya Kant has been part of several major judgments that shaped the country’s constitutional and social landscape. He served on the bench that heard challenges related to the abrogation of Article 370, played a key role in questioning the misuse of the sedition law, and pushed for transparency in issues like voter exclusion. 

Justice Surya Kant will serve as CJI until February 2027, giving him a significant window to drive reform, streamline court procedures, and strengthen public trust in the judiciary.

As Justice Surya Kant steps into this new role, the country watches with anticipation, expecting stronger institutions, clearer justice delivery, and decisions that uphold the spirit of the Constitution.
