Delhi’s iconic Red Fort, a symbol of India’s rich history and a central venue for the nation’s Independence Day celebrations, will remain closed to the general public until August 15, 2025. This annual closure comes as part of the comprehensive preparations for the Independence Day ceremony on August 15, which is attended by dignitaries, security forces, school children, and citizens from across the country.
Every year, the Prime Minister of India hoists the national flag and addresses the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort — a moment watched by millions. In anticipation of this high-profile event, security agencies, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), and event coordinators begin detailed preparations a month in advance. These include structural maintenance, setting up of seating arrangements, sound systems, live broadcast infrastructure, and most importantly, rigorous security drills.
The closure is also part of broader efforts to ensure safety and sanitation, while preserving the monument’s heritage value amidst increased activity. Tourists who planned to visit the Red Fort during this time are advised to reschedule or explore alternate heritage sites such as Humayun’s Tomb, Qutub Minar, Safdarjung Tomb, or India Gate.
While the temporary closure may cause some inconvenience, it ensures that the historic venue is ready for the country’s most celebrated national event.
