Uttara Guruvayurappan Temple: A Slice Of Kerala In Delhi!

Spiritual Retreat: Kerala's Uttara Guruvayurappan Temple in Delhi!

Kriti Sawhney

In the bustling heart of New Delhi, where modern skyscrapers and urban chaos dominate the landscape, lies a serene pocket of devotion and tradition—the Uttara Guruvayurappan Temple in Mayur Vihar Phase 1.

Built in the style of Kerala temples, this sacred space is dedicated to Lord Krishna as Guruvayurappan—the same presiding deity worshipped at the world-famous Guruvayur Temple in Kerala. For Malayali and Tamil families living in Delhi-NCR, the temple is more than just a place of worship—it is a cultural and emotional anchor that keeps their traditions alive.

DID YOU KNOW?

The temple was conceived by the Arsha Dharma Parishad in the late 20th century, with the aim of creating a spiritual and cultural home for the Malayali community in North India. Construction began in the early 1980s, and the temple was formally opened to devotees on 17th May 1983. Over the years, it has evolved into one of the most prominent Kerala-style temples outside Kerala, often described as “Guruvayur of the North.”

The main deity here is Lord Krishna in his Guruvayurappan form, standing with four arms carrying the conch (shankha), discus (chakra), mace (gada), and lotus (padma). The idol is modeled in the traditional style using black stone, resembling the original deity of Guruvayur. The temple also houses smaller shrines dedicated to Lord Ganesha, Lord Shiva, Goddess Bhagavati, Lord Ayyappa, and serpent deities in a sacred Sarpa Kavu.

For devotees, visiting the temple feels like a spiritual connection to Kerala’s Guruvayur. Many who cannot travel to Kerala regularly consider this temple their divine alternative.

Stepping inside, one instantly feels transported to Kerala, with its serene temple courtyards, rhythmic chants, and fragrance of sandalwood and incense.

It is, in many ways, a mini Kerala in Delhi—where tradition, devotion, and culture converge beautifully.
