‘GAMCHHA: The Extraordinary in The Ordinary’ by Dastkari Haat Samiti is an exhibition that fosters creativity, conserves culture, and empowers craftsmen.
The flexible textile known as gamchha, which is frequently overlooked in India's handloom traditions, has developed from its basic beginnings in working-class communities. It is a symbol of respect in Assam, an offering in Bihar, and a fishing net and vegetable sack, among other uses.
The exhibition, which explores the various applications of the gamchha, is curated by Suparna Bhalla and features live demonstrations, art pieces, and design interventions. In order to elevate the fabric from a basic textile to a multifaceted art form, architect Ankon Mitra has constructed spatial installations. Additionally, gamchha-inspired designs, including saris, stylish clothing, and lifestyle items, are on display.
The gamchha is emphasised in the exhibition as a representation of India's creative inventiveness and tenacity at a time when mass production threatens traditional textiles.
Come see how tradition and art interact, bringing form and textiles into harmony.
