Starting January 1, 2026, residents of New Delhi will have access to a new homegrown taxi-hailing platform — Bharat Taxi — which is set to launch as a major alternative to existing services like Ola, Uber and Rapido. The rollout comes as part of a cooperative-based mobility initiative aimed at improving both commuter experience and driver welfare in the city’s urban transport ecosystem.
Bharat Taxi is being developed under the Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited model. This marks a shift toward a driver-owned and operated system, where drivers are expected to retain up to 80 % of their fare earnings — a significantly larger share than is typical for corporate ride-hailing apps.
This model is designed to enhance driver incomes and help reduce dependency on commission-based platforms. So far, approximately 56,000 drivers in Delhi have already registered on the platform ahead of its official launch — a strong sign of uptake within the driver community.
What the Service Offers:
The Bharat Taxi app will function similarly to other ride-hailing applications but with distinct features tailored to local needs:
- Users will be able to book auto-rickshaws, cars and bike taxis through one platform.
- The platform aims to curb unpredictable surge pricing during peak hours, offering more stable and upfront fares.
- Riders can register using a mobile number, enter pick-up/drop-off locations, and track journeys in real time through Android and iOS apps.
By working closely with local authorities such as Delhi Police, the platform also plans to fortify safety protocols and support efficient service delivery.
As Delhiites prepare to welcome the new year with the arrival of Bharat Taxi, commuter choice in urban mobility is expected to broaden significantly.
