Travelling from Delhi to Rishikesh in just 3 hours could soon become a reality. In a major boost for regional connectivity, the proposed Namo Bharat (RRTS) extension from Modipuram in Meerut to Rishikesh has received approval from the governments of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC). The next step will be the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR), with survey work expected to begin shortly.
The ambitious extension is expected to significantly improve travel for pilgrims, tourists, students, and daily commuters while strengthening economic ties between western Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
The proposed project will extend the existing 82-km Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat corridor by approximately 150 kilometres, connecting Modipuram in Meerut to Lakshman Jhula in Rishikesh. Once completed, the total corridor will span around 230 kilometres, allowing passengers to travel between Delhi and Rishikesh in approximately 2.5 to 3 hours—almost half the time it currently takes by road.
The extension is expected to transform travel to some of North India's most visited destinations. Faster rail connectivity will benefit:
Pilgrims travelling to Rishikesh and nearby Char Dham routes
Weekend tourists from Delhi-NCR
Students and professionals commuting between states
Businesses across western Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand
Improved accessibility could also give a major boost to local hospitality, tourism, and real estate development along the corridor.
The approval marks a significant milestone for one of the region's most ambitious transport projects. While construction timelines will depend on DPR findings and subsequent clearances, the proposed extension promises faster travel, better connectivity, and improved access to some of North India's most popular pilgrimage and tourism destinations.
