Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta declared that three metro stations in the Pitampura–Haiderpur area will receive new names. The decision, she explained, is driven by a desire to strengthen local identity and make navigation more intuitive for passengers.
What Are the New Names?
- The existing Pitampura Metro Station (on the Red Line) will be renamed Madhuban Chowk Metro Station.
- The under-construction station in QU Block, previously referred to as “North Pitampura,” will become North Pitampura–Prashant Vihar Metro Station.
- A proposed station called Pitampura North will now be named Haiderpur Village Metro Station.
CM Gupta made the announcement during the Shresth Bharat Sampark Yatra in Haiderpur village, a special event held to honour the martyrs of the Rezang La battle of 1962. The yatra’s arrival in Haiderpur, she said, carries deep symbolic significance — a tribute to national sacrifice and unity.
Why the Name Change?
1. Passenger Convenience & Clarity
2. Local Identity
3. Urban Development Messaging
As the Delhi Metro expands under Phase IV, these renamed stations will likely play a key role in serving both existing and future residents of these neighborhoods. However, the decision may also stir debate about the cost-benefit balance, and whether renaming is the most effective tool for civic development.
