Delhi is set to witness one of its most ambitious infrastructure overhauls as the city government rolls out a 400-kilometre road redevelopment plan, aimed at improving road quality, traffic flow, pedestrian safety, and overall urban mobility. The project, spearheaded by the Public Works Department (PWD), is expected to be implemented in phases and completed by early 2026.
This large-scale revamp comes as part of Delhi’s broader push to modernise civic infrastructure while tackling long-standing issues such as potholes, traffic congestion, and dust pollution.
What Does the 400-Km Road Revamp Include?
The road upgrade is not limited to simple resurfacing. Authorities have confirmed that the project will involve a complete strengthening and redesign of major stretches across the capital. Key components include:
- Re-carpeting and strengthening of roads with improved materials
- Repair of damaged and pothole-ridden stretches
- Upgradation of slip roads and service lanes
- Reconstruction of footpaths for safer pedestrian movement
- Improvement of foot-over bridges (FOBs) and road junctions
- Better drainage systems to prevent waterlogging during monsoons
- Clear road markings, signage, and lane discipline upgrades
The goal is to bring Delhi’s arterial and sub-arterial roads up to modern engineering and safety standards. One of the key motivations behind the revamp is air quality improvement. Broken roads and exposed surfaces are a major source of road dust, especially during winter months.
The 400-km revamp is aligned with other major road and mobility projects underway in Delhi, including ring road upgrades, elevated road proposals, and junction decongestion plans. Together, these initiatives aim to future-proof the city against growing mobility demands.
