If you thought Delhi went to sleep after 10 PM, think again. The capital is all set to reimagine its after-dark scene with two ambitious night market projects that promise to combine the charm of street food with the safety, hygiene, and energy of curated, open-air spaces.
The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is drawing up plans for a post-10 PM night food market inspired by Indore’s iconic “56 Dukaan” model.
According to officials, Connaught Place and Lodhi Road are being examined as the best sites for the market, which would open after 10 PM and include food trucks operated by some of Delhi's most well-known restaurants. The market's objective is to establish a lively, safe, and controlled evening area for both locals and visitors.
Business owners have already taken notice of the initiative. Better and safer late-night areas in the city are also highly desired by young people. Local food truck businesses have reportedly embraced the change, but they are awaiting further government clarification on licensing and operating regulations.
The project will provide a vibrant street food experience at night. Additionally, it will promote local companies, such as lesser-known cafes and restaurants, and help create jobs. In the upcoming weeks, a formal announcement on the night market is anticipated. If it works, other areas of Delhi might adopt the same strategy.
Delhi’s night market dream is more than just about eating — it’s about creating an after-dark culture where people feel safe, connected, and proud of the city’s heritage. If all goes to plan, your late-night food walks in Delhi may soon rival those in the world’s most vibrant street food capitals.
