Indian Railways is preparing to usher in a new chapter of long-distance overnight travel with the launch of its first-ever Vande Bharat Sleeper train on the Patna–New Delhi route. This landmark move brings the speed, comfort and modern technology of the Vande Bharat platform to passengers who prefer sleeper berths for long journeys, especially on one of the country’s busiest rail corridors.

The Patna–Delhi sector sees massive daily movement of students, professionals, families, and migrant workers. With this launch, Indian Railways aims to offer a faster, premium, and more reliable alternative to conventional overnight trains.

The Patna–Delhi distance of nearly 1,000 kilometres is expected to be covered in around 8 hours, a major reduction compared to existing sleeper trains. Designed for night-time operation, the train will allow passengers to board late evening and arrive early morning, maximising daytime productivity.

The train is expected to run at speeds of up to 160 km/h, subject to track and operational conditions. This makes the Vande Bharat Sleeper an attractive option for travellers who want to save time without sacrificing comfort.

The Vande Bharat Sleeper is part of Indian Railways’ broader Make in India initiative, with manufacturing and assembly carried out domestically. The trainsets have undergone extensive high-speed trials and safety testing, ensuring they are ready for long-distance night operations. Railway officials have also confirmed that this sleeper version is only the first of many, with more such trains planned across key intercity routes in the coming years.

As sleeper Vande Bharat trains roll out on more routes, India’s rail network is poised for a quiet but powerful transformation — one night journey at a time.
