With the help of the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), ride-hailing company Uber announced that Delhi Metro would be the first to offer metro ticketing on the Uber app. This is a significant milestone in Uber's strategy to broaden its offerings beyond regular ride-hailing and marks the company's first integration with India's digital public infrastructure.
With this functionality, customers in Delhi may use the Uber app to plan metro trips, purchase tickets based on QR codes, and monitor real-time transport information. UPI facilitates payments, increasing financial inclusion and digital adoption. The company is getting closer to its objective of becoming a one-stop shop for all travel needs by including metro ticketing into the app.
Uber announced that it will soon introduce B2B Logistics via the ONDC network, a service that will enable companies to request on-demand logistics from Uber's delivery network without needing their own fleet, and that three further locations in India are scheduled to become operational in 2025.
The merger follows the signing of an MOU in 2024 while Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi was in India. Uber had pledged at the time to collaborate with ONDC in order to enhance urban mobility and assist India's digital public goods.
