‘Children are not on the street by choice, but because they are left with no other alternative.’
This is why, CHETNA NGO for Street Children, a grass root Indian NGO has been working for the empowerment of street connected children in Delhi and neighboring areas since the past 17 years.
For almost two decades now, the NGO has been attempting to break the vicious cycle of poverty among homeless children on the street and get them access to basic human necessities and rights of protection, education, healthcare and a livelihood. The mission of the NGO is to empower children through proper training, especially girls.
To further their goals, The CHETNA NGO for Street Children has done great work through their various programmes like Badhte Kadam – A Federation of Street Connected Children, Balaknama – A newsletter for and by the street connected children, contact points, centers for harm reduction and well-being, Child line – the 24 hour child helpline, combating modern day slavery and street to school.
The special activities by CHETNA include making police child friendly, residential workshops, training of stakeholders, street talk and a radio programme. In the past, the NGO’s projects like Dreams on Wheels, Dreams on Streets, financial and social empowerment of youth, Yuva, Blue Umbrella and Realizing Rights have been focused towards different causes for these children.
