The Delhi government and other organisations will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) to develop a 4-kilometer section of the Yamuna River for the operation of water taxis.

These solar-powered hybrid vessels, which can accommodate 20 to 30 people at once, are scheduled to operate upstream of Wazirabad between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur. The speed should be around 5 to 7 knots, with a maximum draft of 1.2 metres.

The initiative is intended to increase tourism and give tourists a fresh river cruise experience. With an emphasis on environmentally friendly cruise operations, the project aims to revitalise the river in Delhi between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur.

The boats will be equipped with bio-toilets, public announcement systems, and life jackets for passengers. According to the sources, IWAI will also be installing two HDPE jetties for smooth ferry operations. The project is anticipated to encourage waterway-based short-distance commuting and recreational activities on the relatively clean 4-kilometer stretch of the Yamuna.

To guarantee seamless operations, a thorough river and traffic feasibility study will be carried out prior to the launch. The project is also viewed as a significant step in keeping promises to clean the Yamuna, a persistent problem in Delhi.

By encouraging the cleaning and maintenance of the Yamuna River, the water taxi will promote environmental initiatives in addition to improving public transport alternatives if it is effectively implemented. More environmentally friendly transit options in the area may be made possible by this project.
