
The BJP declared that Rekha Gupta, a former president of the Delhi University Students' Union, will be the city's fourth female chief minister. In the February 5 Assembly elections, the 50-year-old, a first-time MLA from Shalimar Bagh, defeated AAP contender Bandna Kumari by more than 29,000 votes.
The oath-taking ceremony is set to take place at the Ramlila Maidan on February 20. It will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, top BJP leaders, and the Chief Ministers of NDA-ruled States.
Who Is Rekha Gupta?
In addition to being a member of the national executive committee of the BJP, Rekha Gupta was the general secretary of the Delhi-based BJP Mahila Morcha and a former president and general secretary of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU).
In 1992, she began her political career at Delhi University's Daulat Ram College with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). She actively brought up problems pertaining to students while serving as president of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) from 1996 to 1997.
She campaigned to improve public facilities like parks, libraries, and swimming pools after being elected as a councillor from North Pitampura in 2007. After being re-elected in 2012, she expanded her administrative background by serving as the mayor of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC).
In order to assist economically disadvantaged female students in pursuing higher education, Rekha Gupta also started the "Sumedha Yojana." She focused on programs for women's empowerment while serving as the chair of the Women Welfare and Child Development Committee.
She has assumed numerous roles in communal and political activities over the years.
