Plans to launch the nation's first metro corridor with three-coach train service were revealed by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). In order to improve last-mile connectivity and enable seamless interchanges with current metro corridors, the trains will run on the Lajpat Nagar to Saket G Block metro route, which is a component of the metro project's Phase-IV.
According to the statement, the line intends to guarantee a smooth transition with current corridors and improve last-mile connectivity.
The new corridor will employ three-coach trains, designed especially for short-distance urban travel, in contrast to current metro lines that run with four, six, or eight coaches, the statement stated.
It also stated that the smaller train layout is anticipated to be an adaptable and economical solution that guarantees improved frequency and operational efficiency while serving a sizable daily commuter population.
According to the DMRC, a realistic evaluation of passenger traffic served as the basis for the decision. The Lajpat Nagar–Saket section largely serves short-distance travellers who need frequent and effective services, whereas high-density routes require longer trains, it stated.
A three-coach train can accommodate up to 900 passengers per journey, with each coach having a seating and standing capacity of about 300 people. Prime Minister Narendra Modi placed the project's foundation stone in March 2024. The corridor is anticipated to be finished by 2028, with building having already begun.
