In a landmark announcement made at the closing ceremony of the 2025 BWF World Championships in Paris, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) confirmed that New Delhi will host the 30th edition of the BWF World Championships in August 2026, marking the tournament’s return to India after a 17-year hiatus.
The decision to award the 2026 edition to New Delhi came during a high-profile handover ceremony in Paris. BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul and the president of the French Badminton Federation, Frank Laurent, formally passed the baton to Sanjay Mishra, General Secretary of the Badminton Association of India (BAI).
This edition will also mark the tournament’s return to Asia after four years—since it last visited Nanjing, China, in 2018. Hosting the event in a nation that has burgeoned into one of badminton’s most consistently successful nations reaffirms India’s rising stature in the sport.
With badminton enjoying a surge in popularity across the continent, Delhi is set to become the heartbeat of the sport during the tournament.
