In a significant move that reflects the capital’s deep respect for Sikh history and India’s heritage of religious freedom, the Delhi government has declared 25 November as a public holiday to mark the Shaheedi Diwas of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji, the ninth Sikh Guru. The announcement comes as the city prepares to commemorate his 350th martyrdom anniversary with large-scale cultural and spiritual programmes.

Guru Tegh Bahadur, remembered as Hind Di Chadar—the Shield of India—is revered for his supreme sacrifice in 1675. Standing against Mughal persecution and defending the rights of Kashmiri Pandits to practice their faith, he chose martyrdom over submission. His execution in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk remains one of history’s most powerful symbols of courage, compassion, and religious freedom.

By declaring a public holiday, the Delhi government aims to ensure that residents can fully participate in the commemorative events and reflect on the enduring values Guru Sahib embodied.

Official Announcement:

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the holiday through an official communication, stating that 25 November will be observed as a Public Holiday every year in honour of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib’s Shaheedi Diwas. The decision, she noted, is meant to “keep alive the timeless message of faith, freedom, and humanity that Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib stood for.”

As the capital prepares for the commemorative events, the day promises to bring together people from all communities in tribute to a leader who gave his life to protect the dignity and rights of others.
