Uptil now, Delhi peeps were only able to view the masterpieces of renowned European artists by travelling to international museums. Such icons have never been able to call Delhi home.
But, we have some great news! The ambitious project of bringing an original piece by one of the most talented and controversial painters in Western culture to Delhi was successfully executed by the Cultural Centre of the Italian embassy.
Recently on display in a Beijing museum is the privately held painting "Mary Magdalen in Ecstasy," which was painted by Caravaggio in 1600. Delhi will be the painting's lengthy stopover on the way back to Rome.
At a cost of 50 million euros, this specific Caravaggio will be on display for a week at the Italian Cultural Centre in Chanakyapuri starting on April 11 before spending seven weeks at the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art in Saket. With strict security measures and reservations in place, the public will be able to view the masterpiece without charge. Isn’t that great news for you all?
The painter would use people he discovered in brothels and bars as models for his unconventional Catholic works, upsetting the powerful Vatican. Caravaggio was angry and hot-headed, and he was constantly willing to start arguments. He actually finished the artwork intended for Delhi Darshan while he was hiding after killing a friend. So, yea, not everything is fancy but this painting sure deserves eyeballs.
