Following the terror attack in Pahalgam, the Indian government has set a nationwide civil defence mock drill for May 7, 2025, amid heightened tensions with Pakistan. The exercise, which will include evacuation drills, air raid sirens, blackout simulations, and public training sessions, is being conducted in 244 districts by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in order to get ready for warlike circumstances.
This is the first time since 1971 that this has occurred. To evaluate government and civilian systems' preparedness for a battle, missile attack, or aerial assault, a civil defence mock drill is conducted. As the drills mimic actual circumstances, air raid sirens play, city lights are turned off, residents practise sheltering procedures and emergency workers respond in real time. Through increasing awareness and readiness, these activities aim to avoid confusion, reduce anxiety, and save lives.
During the exercise, you may experience unexpected traffic detours, cell signal interruptions, or momentary blackouts. Additionally, officials may practise evacuations or make public declarations. Police and paramilitary forces may pretend that a battle is going on in some areas.
The government encourages people to think of this as a test of readiness. No panic attack is happening. The exercise aids in the government's and the public's understanding of their respective roles. Officials are expected to assess the findings and make any required modifications.
