In a significant development ahead of Diwali 2025, the Supreme Court of India has permitted the sale and use of certified green firecrackers in Delhi-NCR, marking a temporary relaxation of its earlier restrictions on fireworks in the region.

The decision — delivered by a Bench headed by Chief Justice B. R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran — aims to strike a balance between the cultural importance of Diwali celebrations and the urgent need to tackle air pollution that peaks in the capital region during this season.

The Supreme Court outlined a strict regulatory framework for their sale and use:

- Permitted only from October 18 to 21, depending on local implementation schedules.

- Bursts allowed for limited hours only:

Morning slot: 6 am to 7 am

Evening slot: 8 pm to 10 pm on Diwali and the preceding day.

- Only green crackers certified by NEERI and approved by PESO may be sold.

- Crackers cannot be imported or supplied from outside NCR.

This Diwali, Delhi-NCR will see the cautious return of firecrackers — but with green rules. The coming days will test not only the enforcement machinery but also the collective responsibility of citizens.
