In a bid to manage the growing challenges of over-tourism, the popular hill station of Mussoorie may soon implement a mandatory pre-registration system for tourists. The move comes in response to increasing concerns over traffic congestion, environmental strain, and unchecked crowding, especially during weekends and holiday seasons.

Mussoorie, known as the "Queen of Hills," draws thousands of tourists throughout the year. However, the narrow hill roads, limited parking spaces, and outdated civic infrastructure are increasingly being stretched to their limits. Locals and officials alike have raised alarms over frequent traffic jams that sometimes paralyze the town for hours, along with a sharp rise in pollution and litter.

One of the most well-known hill stations in Uttarakhand, Mussoorie, is experimenting. Tourists visiting during peak periods - summer holidays, winter breaks and long weekends - may soon have to pre-register their travel plans online before entering the town. Then, at checkpoints like Kuthal Gate, Kempty Falls, and Kimadi, a QR code will be scanned.

Before visiting Mussoorie, visitors must register their information online under the planned method. This is how it should operate:

1. Enter your name, phone number, car registration number, lodging information, and travel dates in an online form.

2. International travellers will receive their one-time password (OTP) via email, while domestic travellers will receive it on their mobile number.

3. You will receive a QR code following verification, which you must show at checkpoints in order to gain entrance.

4. The vehicle details will be verified by ANPR (Automated Number Plate Recognition) cameras when the QR code is scanned at checkpoints such as Kimadi, Kempty Falls, and Kuthal Gate.

Mussoorie’s new pre-registration rule might just be a step in the right direction—reshaping how India holidays in the hills.
