Good news for commuters! NCRTC started conducting trial runs on the Sahibabad–New Ashok Nagar segment of the Delhi–Ghaziabad–Meerut RRTS corridor as a first step towards connecting Delhi to India's first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS).
This was a significant event since it meant that the Namo Bharat train service would now reach Delhi, connecting the city segment of the corridor to the Sahibabad to Meerut South stretch that was already running.
The corridor will run for 12 kilometres, connecting the Uttar Pradesh station at Sahibabad RRTS to the Delhi stations of New Ashok Nagar and Anand Vihar. When it is operational, it will provide commuters with a quick and effective way to go from New Ashok Nagar to Meerut, cutting down on the amount of time it takes to get there from less than 40 minutes.
The Delhi segment will have three stations: Sarai Kale Khan RRTS station, Anand Vihar, and New Ashok Nagar. Track laying is underway on the remaining segment from New Ashok Nagar to Sarai Kale Khan, which is nearly finished. Later on, the stabling yard Jangpura and the fourth station will be created. NCRTC officials estimate that by June 2025, when the 82-kilometre line is finished, the travel time between Delhi and Meerut will be less than an hour.
