In an attempt to ensure faster movement of time sensitive shipments, Delhi Metro is all set to introduce freight services in its trains. On Sunday, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announced that it is all set to begin freight (cargo) services on its network, with packages to be transported across Delhi-NCR via its trains during non-peak hours.

A memorandum of understanding (MOU) has been signed with logistics company Blue Dart for time sensitive packages to reach quickly. Officials have said that the last few coaches of the trains which are usually empty will be used for this purpose to that there is no inconvenience to the passengers. The freight service will also reduce traffic congestion on roads to some extent.

This system has been introduced taking inspiration from Madrid Metro where is similar project is being undertaken. Madrid Metro began a pilot project in October 2024 to deliver parcels using its metro train network between 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. As per officials, DMRC is in touch with Madrid Metro to exchange insights and best practices in urban freight transportation.
