If you’re travelling in or out of Delhi later this month, here’s an important update to factor into your plans. Flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) — India’s busiest aviation hub — will be suspended for nearly 2.5 hours every day from January 21 to January 26 due to enhanced security arrangements for Republic Day 2026.
What Exactly Is Happening?
During the six-day period, no arrivals or departures will be allowed at IGIA for approximately 2 hours and 25 minutes daily, generally between late morning to early afternoon. The airspace over Delhi will be tightly controlled to allow:
- Republic Day rehearsal flypasts.
- Military aircraft practice sessions.
- Security drills and airspace surveillance.
- Movement of VVIPs and defence personnel.
Airlines have been informed that many flights would have their departure or arrival times changed, even if some may be cancelled. Passengers may be rebooked on different flights in a number of situations, making it more difficult for carriers to handle peak winter traffic.
While the inconvenience is real, these measures ensure the smooth and secure conduct of a landmark national event watched by millions across India and the world.
If your travel dates are flexible, consider rescheduling flights outside January 21–26 to avoid stress and delays altogether.
